  I know that in America, some parts certainly, you can get cash for your empty aluminium cans. Homeless people are often portrayed with shopping carts full of such cans on TV.
  Come to think of it I haven't seen out local 'knights of the road' trawling the streets for car batteries and the like lately, they too performed a worthwhile job.
  So, maybe your local tow-path-tipplers would not do this, but some enterprising folk might. I know one lady in the States that collects cans to give the resultant cash to her favourite charity.
