This new system has been planned for some considerable time; DDC been very busy sending out letters but there are still quite a lot of people missing ( based on previous register), now coming to crunch time as deadline for registration approaches. But the cynical amongst us do wonder as to why, will have cost local authorities money at the very time when every penny counts.

The reason is the fraudulent registration of nonexistent voters and the fraudulent use of postal votes in some areas such as Bolton and Tower Hamlets (the other one). In most countries you have to register by turning up at the town hall with your citizenship documents. Why not here?

Even more confused now as I received a communication from DDC not long ago just asking me if my household details had changed. There was no request for me to prove anything or take documents anywhere.
I certainly understand the need to clamp down on postal voting as it has grown out of all proportion and anyone that has lived in an area with a large muslim community will know the scams that go on.

Not only do you have to register at the Town Hall but produce ID at the time of casting your vote in France.

In America your voting registration is tied in to your Social Security number which is unique and compulsory.
