Vic, with the elderly it is not always about the driving skills. Yes a good number are very good drivers, however there are also a great number who have medical problems or their reaction time to a situation could and should mean they do not drive.

I am 64 so I am getting there and I hope that I will know when the time comes for me to hang the car keys up for the last time but I certainly would have no objections to some sort of test to help make that decision for me.

There are good and bad drivers in all age groups, including the young it is just sorting the good out from the bad that is not easy. I certainly think that if a young driver is caught driving like an idiot there should be no second chance, but a ban for at least 3 years and a retest.

I am not sure but do the police have any powers if they come across some one elderly that may not have committed a driving offence but in their opinion should not be behind the wheel? I am thinking of a neighbour (sadly now passed away) who became very frail and should not have been driving, in the end his son had to prise the car keys from him by selling the car Had he not done so I am not sure how long he would have kept driving.
