I have just sent the following letter to the editor:-
Sir,
Ysenda Maxtone Graham writes of Grammar School selection in Sandwich, Kent (a town where all my children were educated).
She tells of ‘the selection bicycle’, the new bike promised by parents as a reward for their children who pass the Kent Test.
No such incentive was offered in our household.
Instead my four children were all told, in no uncertain terms, that if they failed the test their present bicycle would be sold on E-Bay.
The strategy seems to have worked!
