17:2070131Well done our Mayor,Cllr Jones. A most fitting tribute and beautiful service attended by many paying respect to those who gave their lives 70 yrs ago.
A great shame that it was only attended by a few DTC Councillors. I hope this was not another example of "politics" as such an occassion should be totally void of any political influence.

17:3170134I imagine some were working Pat, but it would still be interesting t oknwo who didn't show. I'm not suggesting they should attend every event, but nevertheless, it is all part of being accountable to the electorate eh? Yeah I know, too much of a novelty.

22:2170178Im not a Town Councillor and I was not invited as Vice Chairman our DDC Chairman attended.Today I visited my dear friend Cllr Roger Frayne whois currently in the Pilgrims Hospice at Canterbury .I then spent time with my family before catching up in my council work .
Some times its a matter of choices and today I did my bit for the living .Roger is a very popular councillor and Im trying my best to cover his work as well as my own ..

I am not directing at DDC Councillors who were represented.
The event was organised by DTC with only the Mayor and about three other DTC Councillors. To me very sad that more DTC Councillors could not support their Mayor.
It may be that I am sensitive on this as I make every attempt to attend such services having lost my father in WWII who was a aircrew member killed over Germany. It is a question of respect to the many men and women who sacrificed their lives to ensure the feedom of this country and reflect on those still in the front line today.
I know others have said on different threads re their thoughts for Roger and this goes without saying that Roger and his family must be very appreciative for your support during difficult times

Heads up for your brave father. My Dad flew during the war...mainly from the nazis if Poland and France before reaching these safe shores in '41. He was lucky to survive 5 years of flyng before being grounded in '44.Something to do with hours and luck. I shall remember your Dad in my prayers.

07:1170488The event was in fact was organised as I understand it by the new Town Seargent, the first thing he has organised,he was also a fountain on knowledge at the Heritage open days over the weekend,my friend who was in town from Barnstaple was really impressed.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

08:1970494I take it from the picture on the DTC website that he is the Sandwich Town Sergeant. Has he given that up or doing two jobs? I only ask as he can't be in two places at once. Can't think of his name but he was very competant at the Mayor Making.

10:5270522Ah, right, got your point then. Certainly any appointment by DTC would be non-political. I wish Kevin Cook well. I daresay I will meet him in November.

Many thanks for kind words, I do know about the correlation of "hours and luck".

The young Town Sergeant is Christopher Hobbs-East. He done a fantastic job last Saturday. My wife and I were doing the Maison Dieu tors but popped into Maison Dieu House where his enthusiam was a delight to behold
Keith
Only reason I asked this is that it has been reported in the past over "political rifts", the Town Mayor making being one, and I would have hoped if there was still such rifts that these would be forgotten with such an event.

Again, good luck to him.

14:1570560I and Simon and our volunteers were very happy indeed to be able to be at the service in memory of our Few, and all those who stood and fell alongside them. We thank the Town Council for organizing this service, and Tracey and Chris who were running themselves ragged behind the scenes to see that all went smoothly.
The firm focus and centre of Remembrance, rightly, is about those who lost their lives in our service. But it is also firmly about those people who lived on, the comrades who fought alongside, the families who to this day mourn their losses, and our new generations who, if we don't teach them the meaning of Remembrance, will grow up unknowing, and unable to choose to pay their respects in their turn. It is an error to think Remembrance is about the dead; to the exclusion of the living - posts hee, incidentally, demonstrate that.
Our acts of Remembrance are part of responsibility towards our whole society; Dover holds a number of such acts and events during the year within the town, accessible to everyone; this is a praiseworthy and essential democratisation of Remembrance (which means, in other words, that holding events in enclosed places with only invited guests, to the exclusion of the general public, as happened recently not so very far from Dover, ain't!). Some people may not attend (as we ourselves, sadly, cannot attend an event next week), some may find they have other priorities on a particular day. This is equally part of the democractisation, and, ultimately it was for all such freedom that our Fallen lost their lives. Anyway, I'm sure that people aware of the significance of Remembrance, but who were unable to attend that day, will be or have been at other Remembrance events in Dover, and I'm quite certain very few miss Remembrance Sunday..
All credit to the Town Council for arranging this very special commemorative service; which, for our part, and I know for many others too, was very much appreciated.
