Yes folks, they are popping up everywhere in Dover. An increasingly digital world.

Hi Paul, it's Digital Subscribers Local Access Multiplexer, i.e. a green box. It's BT catching up at last with Virgin and putting Fibre Optic broadband in a street near you. Or not as the case may be!

Does this mean we might be getting broadband at faster than carrier pigeon speeds her in sheepland?

Dunno Ray, ask BT although I suspect the man in India won't know what you're talking about!
I once tried to report a wonky BT personhole cover to no avail. I gave up and told Kent Highways, they said they would contact BT, I wished them good luck. They did ask however how I knew that it was BT's. I said that the fact it had BT written on it was a bit of a give away.

Terry, I had a similar conversation on Friday with a Kent Highways person marking out potholes outside my place, told him about a dodgy cover nearby and said you'll recognise by FDWC written on it. His response was "It's their problem, who are they?"

Some nice shiny new DSLAMs not a spitting (if you'll pardon the expression) distance from my home.
And finally, one yet to come.

I'm thinking of forming the DSLAM spotter's club. As a trial, how about forumite's reporting sightings on here?

what does it mean overall for the consumer, is it purely for faster internet or does it mean they will offer television channel deals like virgin?

Up to 40Mbit download. It will be competition for Virgin.

I don't want to get you all excited but the DSLAM's are all slaved off normal adjacent BT cabinets. These cabinets are just the distribution points for telecoms along underground ductings and carry no power. They still need mains to be supplied to them. Judging by how long it took EDF to power up a lamp post outside my house it could be two years before they are connected to a supply!

Deal and Dover exchanges are meant to be upgraded to BT Infinity by the end of March 2012, so I'll keep an eye out for the boxes near me

Been nice knowing you :)

Will the improvement only be for BT customers?

Most suppliers only 'rent' use of the lines from BT Wholesale (there has been recent disputes over the amounts they charge) so i would imagine they could be available from other suppliers.
I am hoping that the upgrade may mean that the standard service offered by BT may get somewhere near the 8MB that we pay for !!!!
Been nice knowing you :)
