    Duty & VAT on the drinks you purchased would have been in the region of £1.50

    The pub co or wholesaler will have charged the pub roughly £2.90 for the beer (includes the duty)

    Out of the remaining £2.60 the publican will have to cover the cost of his staff, all running costs etc. after which if he is really lucky means he is making 5-10p net profit, but it is actually more likely that it was somewhere between a couple of pence loss and a a couple of pence profit.
