We went to a function at the Town Hall last night and i couldn't believe the cost of the drinks. A bottle of budweiser was £3.50!!!!! I just took the dog for a walk and we went past the co-op in River and there was a poster for 4 bottles of budweiser for £3.50. When we got there last night i bought 2 bottles of budweiser and 1 bottle of J20 and it was £9.40!!

it does irk that our historic town hall is used as a cash cow by private industry.
i know of someone that tried to book a wedding reception there a few years back, when told of the cost of the wine she aked if she could buy her own.
turns out the corkage charge was higher than the intended cost of the wine she planned to buy.

I went to a funeral a couple of weeks ago and finished up for the wake at a pub in Sandwich. A pint of bitter and half of bitter shandy came to £5.50 p. Total rip off.

Yes Alec - but who is ripping you off?
Duty & VAT on the drinks you purchased would have been in the region of £1.50
The pub co or wholesaler will have charged the pub roughly £2.90 for the beer (includes the duty)
Out of the remaining £2.60 the publican will have to cover the cost of his staff, all running costs etc. after which if he is really lucky means he is making 5-10p net profit, but it is actually more likely that it was somewhere between a couple of pence loss and a a couple of pence profit.

Still a rip off Ross no matter who is doing the ripping off. I believe it is down to this North/South divide again. I can get the same pint in Manchester for £2 or less in an equally good pub.
Before some smart a--se says why don't you go back there then, I don't want to.

Indeed it is - there is also great disparity down here between free houses and pubco owned houses, due to the 35-50% difference in wholesale prices they have to pay for their beer.

Alec, you can partly blame the breweries for the difference, up north they sell the same beer to the pubs a lot cheaper than down here. I do not know if the rents are less or not.
