Dragonflies

  I'm always going on about how much I love dragonflies when photos appear on Doverforum (I even have a small tattoo of one) anyway, this weekend we stayed at a lovely hotel in Peterborough and yesterday the hotel grounds were full of dragonflies. I have never seen so many, there must have been at least 30 or more. Apart form several small ornamental fountains there was no water so I was surprised there were so many as I always thought they preferred being beside rivers, lakes etc. They were curious and came right up to me sometimes briefly touching me with their wings, it was magical.   Paul Holt, warden at Samphire Hoe, writes a nature notes in our village newsletter. This month he had a pic of a dragonfly just like yours, called it a migrant hawker, appears late summer and early autumn and travels long distances to feed before returning to ponds to breed.

  Hi Jeane,
  They are lovely aren't they. I am sure you will appreciate this picture of one that paid a visit to my garden recently. It stayed still long enough for me to get one photo but I was just getting ready for a better pic when it sadly flew away.

  Nice pics. They are really hard to take in flight, you were lucky to get one Jeane. I haven't done very well on dragonflies this year - I've only managed to catch this so-so pic of an Emperor laying eggs up at Bushy Ruff.
