As someone who spends some time getting beggars in Deal moved back to Dover (whence they have almost invariably come) I was impressed to see that Lambeth Police are taking a more pro-active role to combat the problem leaving the 'usual suspects' fewmin!

I always encourage them to go to Deal as they will get better pickings over there

Seriously though I never give money to beggars, if they want a tea/coffee or something to eat I will get that for them. I also point them towards Porchlight; the genuinely homeless are grateful the professional beggars and druggies get rude...

Judging by that article the police are getting demonised more than the beggars. They have local knowledge and say that too many are just after drug money and in my view many people like to think better about themselves by giving out some money with no thought as to what it will be spent on. Many beggars have dogs, better to give a box of dog biscuits, the genuine homeless will appreciate that.

I was told many years ago never to give money to beggars. If they are genuinely homeless, there are plenty of places where they can get food and a hot drink, and if they are just after money for drugs you are doing them no favours by financing their addiction.
I thought about the good sense and logic behind this statement, and I have used it ever since as my reason for not giving money to beggars.
