The leader of Dover District Council has snubbed calls for the authority to use its special powers to safeguard the site of the famous Banksy Brexit mural.

The artwork, which suddenly appeared overnight on the former Shakespeare Hotel in May, has been at the centre of an ongoing row after the owners of the building announced plans for the removal or sale of the piece.

Several campaigns have been launched to keep the huge Brexit mural in its prime position on Townwall Street, including from Dover MP Charlie Elphicke who has written to the authority to Re-development plans

But as the building is in the centre of the town and waterfront area's redevelopment, council leader Paul Watkins says he will not stand in the way of any potential plans to demolish the building.

Locals backed Charlie Elphicke's campaign to get the building listed - which has been rejected

Instead, the council has hinted at moving the mural to another site in Dover so it "does not impede on the town centre, Bench Street, Western Docks master plan development."
Cllr Paul Watkins said: "We are happy to see the mural saved in some shape or form.

"However we are not prepared to let it stand in the way of the Western Docks Development - and it is entirely up to the landowner how he deals with the matter.

"We would try to see where it could be relocated."
