Having been following this over a few days and seeing what they are doing to get it put right A.S.P.
I cannot agree with how they are going about it it looks like they are looking at the cost of doing it the right way which would be alot more then the way they doing it now ,but by doing the right way it would last out a lot longer.
Do I know what I am talking about ?I think after spending some years working on the Railway and some of that time was spend working on that line from Dover to Folkestone I think I do know.
The only way to do that job is by piling and then back fill like the job we done on Dover sea front and other places we have done it over the years and it is still holding out today.I done this kind of work for over 40years so I think in this case I do know what I am talking about. If you do not agree thats OK but there is no need to be rude as in the pass thank you.

I can see them doing it on the cheap, and eventually letting it fall into disrepair and closing the line. Dover can access London by rail via Canterbury, and the line to Dover is no longer needed for cross channel passengers since the opening of the tunnel. I can remember the days when staff from Ashford railway works were offered weekend night work on the permanent way, Vic was a regular !

Mr Nicoll we must know each other then, and you are right summer, winter I was there for some years each weekend.I liked it out there better then the workshops and I would be working all over the place London and Dover being the main place,s and the last years of my working life working for Cooks ,I spend alot of time working on the track.

Like yourself sir I can see that line closed within a few years ,they have been lucky up till now but that is running out it will have to close, as I said the sea will win.Thank you for your post and also the one above that.(3)and (2)

Boot Camp for the yobs responsible for the rock throwing might not go amiss.
Expect it would be against their Human Rights. Pity I don't believe in 'Human Rights' only 'Rights' that have in equal measure 'Responsibilities' that go with them. Rights are earned not demanded.
It's simple really - if you can't be a responsible citizen, you lose some of your rights. No nonsense justice borne out of nothing more than common sense.

Interesting letter in Rail magazine today. It suggests that now is the time to straighten out the 10mph curve at the eastern end. It had been mooted in the past apparently but was dismissed because it would cause too much disruption. Given that there will be no trains for 6 months perhaps now is the time to do it. The new curve would be 35mph.

A brilliant idea that slow stretch used to really irritate me, I am sure if there was the will to do it they would have started by now.

There was supposedly a task force set up but apart from the initial press shots the task force has never been heard from again. Sorting the slow stretch would get London to Dover nearer to the hour and sorting the tunnel out would allow 12 carriages rather than the over-crowded 6 carriages. Seems a no brainer considering it is unlikely this stretch will ever close again for longer than a weekend over the next 10 years.

I would think that the line needs to stay open because of the regular freight trains that are going to the worksite.

Yes the harbour curve needs to remain open for the work trains, though at some point prior to completion of the final concrete pour they will no longer be needed so it is theoretically feasible to fix that problem too,
As for the tunnel - it is not the reason that Southeastern run 6 coach sets rather than 12 - it is a question of manpower - due to the design of the trains a safety rated employee is required in each set to supervise safe evacuation if needed, Southeasterns manning levels are such that they have inadequate staff to provide the necessary cover.

Southeastern run 12 carriages to Thanet with just one safety rated employee. Not having to travel through that tunnel is the reason they can.

That is true but how would you solve the tunnel?
It is a Victorian wet tunnel with two single bores, the central supporting wall cannot be removed to widen the tunnel and the track alignment has already been shifted as far off centre as possible to allow a "safe" route alongside a stationary train.
Oh and they used to run 12 car sets through the tunnel but with a single on board manager had to ask people to move from the rear 6 to the front 6 carriages at Folkestone Central and then allow people to use the rear 6 from Dover onwards - a royal pain in the proverbials for everyone

Yes Ross, I know it would be an engineering challenge but if a soultion was possible now would be the time to solve it.
It amazes me that Southeastern stop the 6 car peak services at Ebbsfleet rather than the 12 car services.
