Hi there
I am really stuck
I am looking for details on some empty shops in Dover but cant find any listing details anywhere to find out about renting them.
First we have the only Holiday shop next to Barclay's bank - cant find anything
then the old MARK ONE store near HSBC - no details
then the old superdrug building (ex bon'e m store) - nothing
and also the unit next to poundland (ex tunnel shoes) - nothing
I have tried to contact the council but again nothing
does anybody know how i can find out? - its so frustrating.
Also how can Dover council charge so much for business rates to independent businesses/new start ups...(rate relief? - if i want to go past tower hamlets - umm no thanks)
maybe that's why Dover is looking very gloomy these days as far as shops go. shocking!
thanks

Welcome to the forum Craig. Suggest you speak to Simon Crowley at Tersons in Castle St. They are the only commercial property agents in Dover.

This might help for Bonmarche from their website.

The Charlton Centre manager is nearly always around if you wanted to go there but that depends on what you plan to sell I suppose.

Most of the units you mention are being rented through Tersons
The level of business rates is set by government not DDC, whilst DDC have an element of discretion in granting relief it is fairly limited. If you are a new business and the premises is the only site you have you may be eligible for full exemption in the first year of operation and then a 50% reduction in subsequent years - talk to the rating team at Whitfield on what reliefs are available to you - they are very helpful.

As Peter and Ross have said, Tersons have most of Dover's commercial properties on their books; most that aren't with Tersons have their own (outside of Dover) agent.
Not sure if Ross is referring to the small-business rate-relief; if you do find a property you want, you can always look on the valuation website to find out what the neighbouring business-rates are and what the varying parts of the premises cost.
Many commercial premises in Dover have (close to) London rents, so a bit of negotiating will help and one or two may be rate-only so no rent payable, but they won't be obvious so you may have to ask about them.
Be careful about the "full-repair lease" too.
Good Luck
