I heard many years ago how the name came about, it’s rather amusing, if true….
Apparently back in Tudor times, a man from Dover was walking along the beach towards Folkestone. He came across a body and at the same time, a man from Folkestone turned up. The Dover man suggested to the Folkestone man to go and get help. When he returned, the fingers had been bitten off the body and gold rings had been removed - hence the nickname Dover Shark!
I also heard at work that people from Deal are called Deal Pongos. God knows how that came about
Anyone else heard such things?

With regard to the latter, the Canterbury Journal, Kentish[!] Times and Farmers Gazette of 12 February 1853 reports the case and ends by saying "With such malpractices these it is matter of no surprise that our boatmen should have earned the cognomen sharks".
