Local seals become television stars as BBC Autumnwatch Live goes aboard Dover Sea Safari
Viewers of Autumnwatch Live on Friday 4th November at 8.30pm will be treated to the delights of seeing footage of the seals living in the sea close to Dover, Deal and Sandwich.
The primetime BBC2/BBC HD programme which is presented live by Michaela Strachan, Chris Packham and Martin Hughes-Games follows the fortunes of British Wildlife as the British Isles moves from summer, through autumn towards the impending winter. With the presenters based this year at Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Slimbridge and the National Arboretum at Westonbirt, a number of roving reporters are travelling the length and breadth of Britain to bring viewers autumn stories about all types of wildlife. Deal based wildlife presenter and cameraman Richard Taylor-Jones together with a film crew went afloat with Dover Sea Safari skipper James Salmon to film and report on the Common and Grey Seal colonies living in the English Channel.
Filming took place over three days in early October. Blessed with brilliant weather and calm seas the Dover Sea Safari Team were able to the support the film crew's aim of getting brilliant film footage for viewers without disturbing the seal colonies. After careful planning to make best use of the tides filming took place in the Stour Estuary and around the Goodwin Sands.
Dover Sea Safari Skipper and Director James Salmon said: "It was great fun working with the film crew and I was really pleased when they said obtained some excellent footage. Dover Sea Safari have just a few cruises left this year but we are already taking bookings for 2012 so anyone wanting to organise a christmas gift with a difference should get in touch."
