I feel someone should correct a few misconceptions expressed in this thread.
Firstly, with regards to Ebbsfleet. Only a couple of months ago they were facing meltdown and possible extinction as a result of their previous ownership. They were saved, however, by a Kuwaiti consortium fronted by Peter Varney, former chief exec of Charlton Athletic. Having removed their long serving manager, they appointed former Dover coach and Charlton Athletic legend Steve Brown as their new manager, and gave him a very generous budget for next season. Brown is very familiar with Dover's players, having coached here last season. As a result, he has taken a couple of players with him, and it is likely one or two more will follow. Ebbsfleet are offering financial terms Dover cannot compete with (and Dover generally pay well), and combined with the reduced travelling distances involved, it comes as no surprise that some players have accepted the offer. In most cases, these were out of contract players, with the exception of Daryl McMahon, for whom Dover reecieved a substantial fee. These are part time footballers who are entitled to take the best offer presented to them, and to be honest, I don't blame them for leaving. However, to try to blame Dover, Chris Kinnear or Jim Parmenter for their departures is unfair. Players come and go, and all will be replaced. Simply put, there is nothing to worry about.
In answer to Keith, the reason other clubs were quicker to start rebuilding than Dover was in no small part due to the fact that Dover's season lasted a fortnight longer (due to playoffs), and obviously the manager didn't even know until after the playoff final what league we would be in. As for Howard's assertion that
"the suspicion is that the manager doesn't want anyone from the last regime there"; Steve Brown left the club to take up a manager's position at Ebbsfleet, having been overlooked for the Dover manager's job in favour of Kinnear when Nicky Forster was relieved of his position. Again, he received a good offer elsewhere, and a chance to start a new career as a manager.
I apologise for the rant, but some of the rubbish written about Dover Athletic over the past few days has been ridiculous. Players have left for better offers elsewhere. It happens. Location always makes it difficult to attract players down here, but we have always managed it because our Chairman pays good wages. However, events at Ebbsfleet have made it more difficult now. Difficult, but not impossible. We have a vastly experienced manager who knows what he is doing, and a chairman who will back him. The time to start doubting them is when the new season kicks off, not the beginning of July.
