Now that meetings are televised maybe the dress code will be addressed.I always maintained you were at a business meeting and should dress accordingly.Jackets should be worn and only removed on a very hot day .The Officers always kept to the rules.i have so many jackets in my wardrobe.I always wore a jacket when I attended MCD or Age. Concern .

Sue
This is probably where we depart from agreement Lol.
It's fair to say you had many years in local govt so would be interested enough to keep up to date with who your local councillor is.
This is not the general case, and as your aware surveys have been carried out over the years on that one question where the locals reply was they didn't know who who the local councillor was, or ever seen them.
Of course there would be maybe three or four that would be known .
I'm afraid I also don't agree on dress code .
Let me give you a small example of this.
Apart from the saying
Don't judge people by appearance.
Whilst on the county council in a stifling hot day I took off my jacket (the alternative was to faint !)
And was told I was not allowed to!
Of course my health was going to come first , and it was left there Lol
But we really don't want to get into what people wear, it's what they can do for Dover that is far more important .
I can recall a few councillors that didn't dress up but we're leafing lights for there own areas but also very respected in the council itself.
I won't name names as some have sadly departed .
The TV on debates in the council , again Sue you have an interest that many don't share , which is an issue councillors need to address , how do they involve or enthuse locals in the work of the local authority.

I am sure most councillors deserve to be mocked at some time during their tenure.
I do not care what they look like so long as they look clean and tidy and at least show some interest in the matter being discussed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Totally agree - it was not the images of tractors that got me, it was being on the phone during a HoC debate in the first place.

Although I've reworded to hopefully not cause offence, "If you polish a poo, it still remains a poo...."

I think all Councillors get mocked during their careers as elected representatives. It’s the nature of the politics. You just need to accept it as part of the role. I think the issue is what they are mocking you for.
You need to thick skinned & also have the judgement to decide what they are mocking you for is justified & do you need to take action if justified or see it through.

It means my view is it doesn't matter what you look like, it's how you behave, how you support, what you say and what you do.
Our PM, for example, wears a suit, but it doesn't matter how much you polish it......

You don't have to wear a uniform or a suit to have standards and to say so these days is very old fashioned and out of date I'm afraid!

That's a shame that some remain unknown but that's how it is .
I do recall Sue when you were boasting on how many hats you had for the garden party where the public were shut out of kearsney abbey .
