Dover Castle featured on this mornings ITV news. It heralded the opening of the new Dunkirk exhibition. There is a large film show with sound effects. The report featured interviews with Lord Ramsays son and Dunkirk veterans.
A great piece that should attract 1000's of visitors to both the castle and Dover .

It was on the National news yesterday lunchtime and evening and of course local news too, so yes indeed Marek, it should help visitors to both the Town and Castle and hopefully other historic sites and attractions here.

Unfortunately we didnt get any info through on the developments yesterday at The Castle but it all looked very interesting on TV last night. All the national news channels carried it. Here is a picture from the upbeat coverage on C4 last night..self explanatory.
It will certainly help with visitors to the castle but do the visitors come to the town itself? The feeling is they dont. The carparks up there get full very quickly on big days as do the surrounding fields as support carparks...but I suspect its an in and out philosophy.

Sorry I did not see yesterdays news so apologies for posting late but this is the sort of coverage that Dover should jump on and exploit. Is all the accommodation at the officer's mess being fully utilized? or could some of it be converted into overnight accommodation.
An open air pop concert or two could boost numbers. Jersey have a wartime type show on at the Opera house at the moment thats proving very popular with both tourists and residents. Open air cinema, medieval type bbq, a local crafts fair or even a car boot sale would help to get day trippers down at the weekends. Remember how popular the Folkestone seafront market was years ago.Anything to get the place used more and attracts visitors.
Dover must start thinking outside the box if its going to survive in todays economic climate.

Sadly Marek English Heritage have no interest in the survival of Dover town and play no part outside the Castle walls. What a great hotel those officers quarters would make - something we have been saying for decades....

Perhaps with the cutbacks there will NEED to try and think outside of the box - EH must be doing something wrong if they got a lot larger budget cut than the Arts?
I have seen the 'new' tunnels and can't say that I was that impressed

But Marek's other ideas are not bound by EH. What about a Folkestone style market on the seafront? Or the funfair on the seafront? The castle used to have Shakespeare plays performed in the grounds and son et lumiere productions too.

From what I saw the Rolls Event on the seafront was a success and probably didn't cost that much to put on - a bucket and spade rally always gets people in.
I still think move the bandstand to Granville Gardens and that way I think it will get used a lot more
Been nice knowing you :)

Barry it is not the job of the E/H to put Dover back on its feet again ,that is down to the two councils and the main one being the D.D.C. and up till down they are falling down on doing it,The Castle brings millions of the public to our area it is up to the councils to find away to bring them into the Town,"How can they do that" well we all know whats needs to be done on that one.
