22:1538795Not an intentional post this as I was just retiring for the night. Just appeared on the yahoo page. Apparently, about 204 people in Irkutsk, Siberia, have been taken ill with severe abdominal pain after drinking holy water to celebrate Epiphany. The Russian orthodox church believe any water is holy, according to this report. But Russian tap water is mostly undrinkable.

22:2838798i remember being in leningrad(st petersburg) during the late seventies, the tap water was yellow.
i was informed that the wicked nazis had damaged the sewers with their shelling in the 1940's and money was not available to repair the tsars victorian creations.
for the life of me i cannot think why irkutsk would have unsafe drinking water.

22:3538801I worked in an office where the drinking water was yellow/brown. It was because they had copper pipe joined to iron pipe joined to plastic pipe and it was all corroding, yes we were drinking rust!
The holy water reminds me we used to practically drink it out of those little fonts inside the church doors as kids - after everyone dipping their hands in!

22:4038803Actually speaking of water, it reminds me when we had water dispensers installed (same office), the kind that have a hot / cold water tap machine which is 'loaded' with a huge water bottle. I always felt ill after drinking from them so as Health and Safety rep commissioned a report. They took one away and the amount of germs that were discovered..............I went back to drinking rust in emergencies. Seriously though I drank tap water from the other side of the office with newer pipe work, it was healthier!

22:4938806Amazing though that throughout our history, and up to the 1990s/2000s, we all survived and were okay without all the bottled spring water about now. Any reason, or is it the marketing people scaremongering again to help their sales/profits?

22:5538809Years to come Jeane, I`m sure we`ll have soft drinks with added rust to promote healthy liver`s, and be laughing to our grandchildren that it wasn`t considered healthy in our day. We have added iron now, so we`re on our way.

23:0538811That`s another thing Howard, we get a water bill, but go out and buy water. I haven`t drunk tap water for the last 2 years. And if anyone thinks water is water, they do taste different. Trust me.

23:1338814I was at sea for 38 years and we took water on board from all kinds of places, up West African and Borneo creeks, the Yangtse river and in Russia many times and I cannot remember ever going down with a bug.
Went down with the alcoholic bug many times but that was self inflicted

23:2238816I think Legionares diseas had a lot to do with it all.
It breads in dead areas of pipe works and can easily be flushed into the main system.
Water temperatures need to be controlled to avoid most of this, cold water 19dgs or below, hot water 60dgs or above.
Does any one know the main culprit for breeding this diseas?
Posh barry has got one.

10:1338825It can be caused by air con, certain water systems, shower heads, water storage tanks which have been refurbished.

10:2238826It is not so much that it is caused by air con, etc, more that certain temperatures are more conducive to it multiplying. As Ian says, you have to avoid storing water at a temp of between 60 and 19. If you have a shower or tap you do not use very often, you should run it thoroughly at least once a week to get rid of "old" water. As for the Russians, I suspect their "holy water" had been stored for some time in bottles before drinking. Any water can grow bugs if left long enough.

10:2638827I used to think the same about air con Jeane, but believe it or not it isnt a problem.
your right about the rest though.
The worst for habouring it are jacoosis ( cant spell ) and bubble type baths.
Howard I think our Barry is gonna be on your case very soon.

12:5538833I sampled the spring water a while back in Tunbridge Wells, an acquired taste, like rusty nails, it's handed out to tourists in the Pantiles by a chap in 17th century costume.
I once wore a legionnaires uniform but that is another story

15:4838837I'm getting this mental image of Barry W-S in his legionnaires uniform in his jacuzzi!
Sorry Barry - I know you have a sense of humour.

16:5738841Just noted on Diana`s post about running the unused shower, reminds me of when we had showers at some working location`s, where they had to be run for 5 minutes continually with hot water to get rid of any contaminates, if not used regularly.

18:1738848I hardly ever drink water straight from the tap these days, I only drink filter water at home now, it tastes so much better. Alec, I have it on good authority that plenty of alcohol will kill all known germs
Jeane, I've seen Barry cut a dashing figure in his legionnaires uniform and I've seen him many times in the jacuzzi but I hasten to add never both at the same time
