I`ve just had a good long weekend away up in Blackpool at my sister`s with a big wedding do, and while up there, although I`ve always loved Blackpool and the surrounding places, since being on this forum, I viewed everything in a different way. I just found myself helplessly comparing things with Dover. Anyone else on here found that? Nearby Lytham St Annes, always been a lovely town, different sorts of shops, and a greater variety of goods, and not much bigger than Dover. Didn`t spot any derelic buildings, of any sort, (in Lytham). Indoor markets up there are always busy, and seem to do well, so why not down here?

My wife's family are from Blackpool, Colin - well, Thornton Cleveleys to be exact, so we go up there often. I love the Fylde Coast, but have to say that I prefer Dover. As for Lytham - look again. They have their fair share of closed shops, just not concentrated in the centre as ours are; and, if you ventured into Blackpool itself you'd have found great swathes of closed shops, especially in the Hounds Hill Shopping Centre which I find very reminiscent of our own Charlton Centre in terms of it being shabby and much past its best.
I do agree with you about the indoor markets, though. Next time you're up that way, check out Fleetwood's indoor market which I have to say is superb. I think it's a cultural thing, though - everybody seems to go to them whereas they don't here. But then, I find the Dover indoor market second rate for quality and downbeat in ambience, decor and presentation, nowhere near the standard of the indoor markets on the Fylde Coast.
True friends stab you in the front.

You`re right with Blackpool Andy. In the 80s and 90s, we were up there 2 or 3 times a year sometimes. The last time was about 8 years ago, and I did notice a very different picture this time to what it was then. As you say, the Hounds Hill area has really gone down, and I wish I`d have got a few more picture`s, but with camera problems, I had to make sure it was okay for the wedding. I may get up there again in the summer, and give Fleetwood another visit. Hard to imagine how busy that town was in it`s heyday of fishing boats.
