"As ever UK plc lags behind the rest of the world as it has since the aftermath of the Second World War when instead of investing in technology, engineering, research and development, infrastructure etc we blew it all on dentures and NHS glasses for people who are now long dead."

A generalisation too far, even by your standards Cap'n. In my particular field (information technology) we led the world up into the 1970s. Remember Lord Weinstock who ran GEC? One of their subisdiary companies, ICL, was a match for the American giant IBM until Thatcher decided that GEC should be broken up and sold off. Only recently our last IT star, ARM technologies of Cambridge, has been allowed to fall into the hands of the far east (Softbank and now Nvidia) without so much as a whimper from this government.

The future was with us - we just had governments incapable of appreciating its value.
