21:2671916Another from my collection, and we`re all familiar with the raid on Dieppe in the last war, but can someone date this post card of Dieppe, which I assume is pre-war? Also, were there any services from Dover to Dieppe prior to the war, and what`s it like now?

I was fortunate to be involved with the Newhaven/Dieppe route in the early 1980's.
I have a picture in a book that is similar to yours and it dates "as early 1930's". I hope to scan in and put on this thread.
As far as the town of Dieppe. It is the best of the Channel ports. Superb restaurants and good shopping. A wondeful museum (excellent art collection and some of the finest ivory carvings) and cleaner than Calais or Boulogne.
When I was working in Dieppe I discovered that many Paris businessmen bring their valued clients for lunch in Dieppe.

22:1972067wasn't dieppe the scene of a naval battle in the last unpleasantness that ended with merchant ships dragged into the conflict?
i knew of a chap that was involved, his ship was on fire and he was rescued from the sea by by german sailors and he spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp.

22:2472068Thanks Pat, it`ll be interesting to compare your picture. I`ve always known Dieppe from either the raid or the Newhaven-Dieppe route, but never given a thought till now as to how it compares to Calais or Boulogne. I`ll have to get a map out as well to see where its located, relative to the above two french ports.

On post 1 you ask if there was a Dieppe/Dover Service.
I have checked records back to the origin of the route 1847..It being eventually a jointly owned service between London Brighton South Coast Railways and Region Ouest of France eventually being BR/SNCF. It was not a pooled service but joint with British having one third and French two thirds share.
The only time the route did not operate an advertised service was in WW1 when it operated from Folkestone (being a Railway owned port) to Dieppe.
On several occasions due to emergencies it operated to Portsmouth or Folkestone.
A French Company Schifino (Freight Only) who normally operated a sevice from Dieppe to Shoreham ran a freight service from Dieppe to Dover Eastern Docks but this did not last very long, a similar situation as with LD Lines.
Hope this helps

08:0972082Thank you for that interesting information above Pat, and although I`ve had the interest with the early railways into Dover for many years, I don`t think I`ve ever seen Dieppe mentioned so that was a nice piece to read about. The times we think we know it all, then up pop`s another bit of info` to show time and again, we don`t. Your email hasn`t arrived yet by the way, just in case you had a problem.

19:0372139LD Lines operated a service from Dover to Dieppe but this was not successful and after a short period of operation was curtailed.
