EVERY YEAR I HAVE TO HAVE A RETENOPOTHY SCAN BECAUSE I AM DIABETIC I HAVE TO GO TO THE PAULA CARR VAN IN THE CAR PARK AT MY DOCTORS SURGERY,THEY DO A VERY GOOD JOB. BUT MY PROBLEM IS THAT I HAVE LOST A OF MY BALANCE & I HAVE BIG TROUBLE GETTING UP IN TO THE VAN & GETTING OUT.WHEN I PHONED THEM THEY COULD NOT OFFER MY ANYWHERE THAT IS EASY FOR ME TO GET TO .THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN BEING DISABLED FRIENDLY,THE SHOPS HAVE TO HAVE A RAMP SO WHY NOT THESE PEOPLE,I THOUGHT IT WAS LAW FOR PLACES TO HAVE A WAY FOR PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE DISABLED,

I also thought so. When I used to go for breast screening they gave an alternative to the mobile unit if you were disabled.

I’m surprised that you are treated in this way Roger as I am able to have my annual check done at the closest hospital to my home which is near a bus route.
I don’t use my car as they tell you not to drive after the scan as they are aware of the effects that it has on your vision for some hours afterwards.
To expect you to struggle there and back home is not on and I would suggest that it is worth raising this at your next diabetes clinic check.
Also it may be worth raising or researching this question on this diabetes forum which provides a lot of useful information.

I contacted the Paula Car Trust this morning, who told me that is a couple of years or so they will be building some static sites to do the eye screening but at the moment the nearest one is in Dartford,Which is not much help to me. So I will have go to the van this year, but they will sort something out for next year,Let's hope I don't have any problems getting in & out of the van

I had my screening at the van earlier this year and was referred for further tests. These were carried out at the new Buckland hospital. Am pretty sure that if you struggle with the eye van then they would be able to accommodate you there Roger

After a lot of e-mails & phone calls to the Paula Carr people the tell me that there is a static unit at deal hospital,so I have to go there with patient transport. I wonder why a small hospital like deal has a unit & brand new hospital .......Buckland has not once ,again Dover get sort changed buy not have one

It would be impractical for our three local hospitals to all have the same services, Deal may have a procedure that Dover hasn't but the reverse applies. The small hospitals in Dover, Deal and Folkestone are all very accessible to those living in our part of East Kent.

I think that is a lot of the problem, on maybe a rethink on where services are best provided
not every hospital can have every service
