As a former Community development/ regeneration officer, I am proud of the small achievements I made, in fact many of our local councillors gained confidence and knowledge from courses I set up to enpower them.
My greatest disappointment was that the funding allocated to my team did not allow me to work with local businesses directly, although I did stretch the edges a bit at times.
I approached many firms, large and small, in the district and asked them to adopt a community group/ project with a scheme which would have brought mutual benefits. Two firms had the decency to reply.
I often find that with all good intentions, local authorities have problems with raising expectations, nothing wrong with that but without the means to deliver within reasonable time scales, the only thing this achieves is a limp, i.e. they shoot themselves in the foot!
