My brother and his wife earn about £14,000 a year total and have to pay their rent, council tax, water rates energy bills etc. out of that.
Richard works for Saga on minimum wage (all sales staff are on minimum wage) and Saga are continually looking for ways to stop paying them commission, so he takes home just over £800 a month and his wife who works part-time (the only job she can get), takes about half that.
They are not entitled to any benefit money of any kind as they have been told the Government reckon they can cope quite easily on £105 per week - yeah right !!
Saga must be the worst company to work for (pay and conditions-wise), but it is a job and it goes some way to paying the bills.
They are in deep relative poverty and cannot see anyway out of it - thanks to Saga. He has (still is) tried looking for jobs, but because of his age (60) no one else will touch him.
Whoever says ageism is not practised by businesses, doesn't know what they're talking about.
Merry Christmas.
Roger
