    Balancing the defence budget and consolidation is essential.

    The previous position where the last government had undertaken to buy equipment without ensuring the funding was in place was just irresponsible.

    We are, however, left with a budget that is far too low and it needs to be increased as soon as possible to ensure we retain and extend capably with flexible forces to respond to a whole range of diverse future threats.

    From the present position we can at least be sure of where and how future increased funding will be directed rather than it be swallowed up in mouth to mouth trade-offs.

    I might point out that it has already been stated by HMG that the defence budget is the priority to be increased from 2015 as it should be.
