the stars were out in force for the launch today, hopefully the traders there will be more enthusiastic than dover's were when roger launched his scheme a few years back.

Good Luck to the Deal Traders.
I wonder who is running/managing it - surely not the local Labour party ? I've only seen Claire and other local reds involved with it.

Roger, my good friend Mark Goldfinch of
www.3deal.co.uk is the driving force behind it. Far left in the picture. Though not necessarily politically ;) Definitely not a Labour-only project - David Little was at the launch last week, as was Clair, both in a spirit of cross-party agreement on the project, it seemed.
I wonder if there is scope for such a business-community driven project in Dover?

I'm sure you know Andrew, I ran a Dover Loyalty Scheme a few years ago, but because I couldn't get any moral or financial support, I had to close it down after two years.
I believe there were about 60 or just over, businesses that were members of it. I had a very good website too, even if I say so myself and had many places around England, including some London Boroughs phone me up about it.

I was only vaguely aware of the details of the Dover scheme, Roger. A shame that your efforts weren't supported. Perhaps the Deal Card can be broadened out to encompass Dover as well?

I was hoping at the time Andrew, that the Dover scheme could have been extended to Deal and perhaps Sandwich, but with no support from any "body" it was never going to be as successful as it could/should have been. No one can be successful in isolation.
That's another reason why the Discover Dover leaflet wasn't the success it could and should have been - I was doiung it on my own with no official support, although DTC did support 1 print run.
The Visitor Information Centre told me it was the most successful and popular tourism leaflet they had ever had - tourists loved it.

We supported both initiatives but shared Roger's frustration at the lack of the funding needed to promote them beyond Dover.

You did indeed Peter, and I thank you for that support.

if the discover dover leaflet was the one in one of the pockets on the tourist information board on p & o ferries then it was a success.
saw many read a copy on the Calais/dover leg.

Some of the translations in the French version were full of schoolboy howlers. I re-wrote our entry in better French.

Time for me to call on the archives again...this time the famed picture of the Discover Dover leaflet launch.
That's PR man Nick Stevens there on the left, Nick worked in turn for both Hoverspeed and LD Lines, with of course our very own Roger Walkden himself on the right hand side. Both guys holding the leaflets with considerable panache. Full of optimism we were those days, happier times.
On the very same dock, and this is indeed a tenuous link...we have Kelly Brook but not on the same day. This is just a gratuitous excuse..
Naughty girl playing with the LD Lines Captains hat like that...tut tut!

Thanks Paul - great photo, as you say, good times.
Peter, you're comment about schoolboy howlers can't be right as it was written by two Frenchmen, both very conversant (and qualified) in English.
Henri from the VIC and a French chap who lived up the road from me who had a degree in English.
As we all know, you can be educated and articulate and still use different words and phrases.
I do remember you making a comment at the time.

I particularly remember the translation of the Transport Museum's advertisement. There was obviously confusion in the translator's mind over the phrase 'used to drive', meaning 'did it in the past' as opposed to 'utilised for the purpose of driving', which made a nonsense of one particular sentence. Sometimes literal translations fail to capture the essence of a message.

That's the one I remember Peter, but sadly, not speaking French, I can't comment.
