What it is really saying is that once Buckland health facility!! is built the outpatients faiclities in Deal are expected to be withdrawn by East Kent Hospitals Trust. So Dover's gain is Deal's loss.
A major chunk of the hospital site redundant [unless other services are commissioned] and the site's viability could be hit.
The site is managed by the East Kent Community Trust.
Early warning is accurate

So safe for quite a while yet, big loss to Deal as it is so well used and will mean a lot of hassle for those without transport, and cost for those with transport, to get to Dover. Makes no sense at all.

Not necessaily Martin the Buckland project is now programmed to be underway in December with planning applications currently being witheld until later in the month awaiting financial appraisal decision.
The bottom line is by the end of 2013 the Deal scenario could be moving forward.

we don't know yet what services will be available at buckland i suspect that if some of the outpatient services are moved there from deal then there will not be much room left for accident and emergency and other services.

I feel very sorry for the residents of Deal and in particular seniors who need outpatients appointments close to home. To be honest I am not at all surprised. Having attended many meetings about facilities in Dover and the Hospital consultations etc one often leaves a meeting feeling it was all a PR stunt. Now I can speak from experience having 2 parents in their 80s with different health problems. My diary would make a brilliant TV documentary about the lack of co-ordination over appointments etc. The past 2 days are one example. Yesterday Dad to Kent and Canterbury at 12 noon and Buckland Warfarin Clinic at 2:15.
(without a car how could anyone do that?). Today back to Kent and Canterbury with Mum at 11:00hrs.
Throw in 5 Ambulance calls during the night over the past 6 weeks( the paramedics are wonderful) which resulted in 4 A&E trips to Kent and Canterbury and I trip to William Harvey. How do people without their own transport cope with that.
Its no wonder Dover is falling apart whilst so many are spending hard cash on travel to get to these appointments. If its spent on petrol it cant be spent in local shops.
So now its Deals turn to loose outpatients appointments. Am I surprised frankly no. My Diary would now make a wonderful TV Programme about how people in Dover have to spend their time travelling around Kent to appointments. 2 parents in their 80s with differing health problems.in the last 2 days for example 2 appontments in Canterbury and One at Buckland (such joy). No wonder Dover is falling to pieces before our very eyes when half the town is running around trying to get health problems sorted elsewhere. I really do feel sorry for those in Deal. I have attended many meetings but often come away feeling those who have attended are just wasting their time.

welcome to the forum janet, your post will strike a note with many here in dover and deal over the impossibility of making hospital appointments.
i know of a case in the next road to me where a lady in her 90's could only get to doctor's surgeries or hospitals by cab, she was allowed a few vouchers to cover this in lieu of a bus pass but only paid for about 30% of her trips.

Deal Hospital has been threatened with closure for as long as I've lived in East Kent, some 22 years to be exact. Deal Hospital is a first class facility, serving the town admirably well. I desperately hope that it can be saved; East Kent needs Deal Hospital and not at the expense of Dover either. Let us fight to keep it open.

Don't think it's a matter of Dover or Deal Andy but what services are to be provided in each.
If would be perverse if we were arguing on the preservation of one cottage hospital to provide another at its expense.

i have used their services a couple of times and it seems a well run place, the main problem being its public transport links.
one bus an hour passes the door on the deal/canterbury route.

Why Deal Howard , if that is not a too sensitive question?

You read too much into my question Howard, don't think they have that clinic at Deal.

The physio department at Buckland are moving into the main hospital shortly to give way for the begining of building works for the new health facility, then of course once finished I'm told the main hospital part will be demolished apparently for housing.
Both the Deal hospital and Buckland have served their communities so well over the years. Pity, but it's a sign of the times we find ourselves living in today.
Yes, welcome Janet, your post will have a familar ring to many I'm sure. May I also add that if one drives to these appointments not only are there petrol costs but parking charges too which many people cannot afford in these stringent times.

I would be surprised if it has to close even when other local facilities are built.
