SHINING A LIGHT ON OUR VOLUNTEERS
Following the success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, which drew to a close on Sunday 9 September, Dover District Council would like to say a huge thank you to all of the individuals who have supported the Olympic and Paralympic Games at a local level.
The celebrations in Dover District would not have been possible were it not for the volunteers, particularly those involved with the Olympic Torch Relay, and various events at Dover's Live Site in the Market Square.
The Olympic Torch Relay was supported by 330 volunteers, all of whom contributed to make the event safe and enjoyable and one to be remembered for years to come. The Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration in Dover was recognized as one of the biggest and best in the South East of England, and despite the weather the enthusiasm of the volunteers did not waver.
During the Games, 30 volunteers brought Dover's Live Site to life for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, for 'Super Saturday', and on a daily basis by dressing the Market Square with flags and seating, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the thrilling sporting action and get behind the spirit of the Games.
Cllr Sue Chandler, DDC Cabinet Member for Community, Housing and Youth said: "We are enormously grateful for the huge contribution that our volunteers have made in supporting events in the district, helping local people to enjoy such a memorable summer. We hope that more people may be inspired to join the many volunteers already working with us to make a difference in their communities in so many ways. This would be a great lasting legacy of the Games."
