Charges are to rise from £1.50 to £2.00 for cars according to Radio Kent.

And then to £2.50 a year later.

Ha, Ha.....Mike Penning just saying that the continued toll and the increases to come will be used to pre-fund a second crossing which is required to provide the additional capacity required.

Rather surprised at your opinions here, Peter and Neil.
Over the past months, the Government have stated various times - the last time being the other day - that road tolls need be introduced to Britain.
So I can't see an existing toll being cancelled, but rather more being implemented.
And at this point, we can be certain that tolls will start, among other places, at commercial ports on entry to Britain. It's just a matter of time in my opinion,

Alex - I have not expressed an opinion as such on this subject...merely laughed at the idea that they might be discontinued at Dartford.

My laughter was at the fact that anyone actually believed that the tolls would be dropped as promised.

I agee with Peter completely, the statement saying that the tolls would be dropped was a complete ruse.

I thought road tax was used to pay for the roads?

If they opened it up they probably would not need a new crossing.

Fully understand your situation there, Keith.
But the State is cash-strapped, so the Treasury will try to gain billions a year on new road tolls at some point in the future, the idea being: pay to use.
There is the possibility the Gpv. got the idea from me with my port toll proposal, which I equiparated to European road-tolls, explaining all the financial benefits of the pay to use philosophy. (After all it reduces public spending).
I don't drive a vehicle, hope I don't get ostracised for all this by those which do.

I did Dartford Crossing twice a day for two years until this Spring. Once it took me nine hours to get home because of the traffic hold ups that snarled up the entire system from Dartford to Blackwall. Most days a 1.5 hour journey took over 3 homewards because the toll booth system was rubbish. And I had a DartTag! A toll should not just imply revenue for the company, but also a decent service for the punters. Dartford is the exact opposite.

Dartford doesn't charge during the night when traffic is light but stops everyone for money when traffic is heavy.
Some years ago while driving to Croatia we got caught in a horrendous rush hour jam on the autostrada near Venice. The authorities responded to the problem by opening the toll gates to allow everyone to drive through without stopping or paying. Problem solved.
