The recent tragic death of a young woman in Dover has highlighted a growing menace to pedestrians but does not seem to have produced much in the way of positive action to deal with it.

This incident had been coming for a long time. It began with widespread parking on double yellow lines, escalated to widespread pavement abuse by cyclists and has culminated in an increasing trend for cars to treat red lights as optional.

Kids think nothing of bombing around blind corners on pavements, at top speed, after dark, with no lights, bell, or even any high vis clothing. Not that they should be on the pavement in the first place.

Like much anti-social behaviour, it is tolerated where zero tolerance should apply. Where are the police? Why are so many people so spineless in not challenging it more?

The worst spot of all is the Folkestone Road-York Street junction. Be aware.
