    Time to move on

No. Sorry. It's become an interesting thread.

Troll turns up. Doesn't appear to have all of the facts. Gets corrected by people who do. So far, so typical internet forum.

Then a few regulars get on their high horses. I've been holding off from posting the below, but here goes:

Harsh as it may sound, this is the nature of politics today and the Internet allows people to post all sorts of lies and slander with total impunity. Many people will defend their anonymity saying their job doesn't allow them to post openly but in my opinion if they have such a job they should not be posting at all.

I now have a general policy of not responding directly to people whose forum handles are obviously pseudonyms and I would advise others to do the same. Of course this does not apply to Capt. Haddock because we all know who he is.

Good. So you won't be responding to this then.

People with certain jobs shouldn't be able to voice their opinions on line? What a ridiculously pompous statement to make. Do you think they should keep their opinions to themselves at all times? Maybe you think they shouldn't be allowed opinions at all? Yeah, you advise others to be really unfriendly like yourself ;)

This forum is descending to the worst excesses of the defunct DoverLocals.

I seem to remember this site had to set up a separate politics forum as things were deemed to be getting a bit too nasty and personal for the front page. Or something.

I always thought this site was a little bit stuck up compared to Locals. An older demographic it would appear, with a few too many self important, self promoting people mutually back slapping (upvoting) each other. A really unfriendly to outsiders clique. Oh dear. Have some scary new kids been allowed into the playground?

I for one am extremely glad at the decision to allow pseudonyms (I'm sure a few of the old Locals forumites can work out who I am), and I applaud the owners decision to allow this. Very brave considering the opposition from some regulars. It might just liven this (pretty dead) site up a bit. I'm on a number of forums (fora?) and it really is highly unusual to see so many people using real names (but hey, them's were the rules right). Block me and/or ignore me if you like but I ain't going nowhere.

I remember the early days of being on-line, when the general advice was "don't give away too much personal information". When did that shift to todays "Here's me! Here's what I'm doing right now. I think the entire planet needs to know what I had for breakfast", narcissistic orgy of showoffness?

I still think the old advice is wise.
