Sadly, Howard, I agree with you and such recent events as in Rwanda and/or Srebrenica show that we have learned so little from our pasts. I recently visited the Lochnagar Crater near Thiepval where a mine was exploded under the German lines. The scale of this hole in the Earth, a hundred years on, is terrifying and it is unimaginable what it must have been like to be near when it was detonated. We are more 'sophisticated' now in that we can send missiles through letter boxes in front doors but all the time military might is seen as an answer to problems we are doomed to repeat our mistakes.
