This, I believe, shows the cut of the branch railway which used to connect the Eastern Docks with the main line near Martin Mill. I think an overbridge still exists near the Swingate. Am I right in saying that it was used in connection with the Eastern Docks construction and the transportation of coal before the advent of the overhead ropeway. Can somebody put me right on this?

Yes a overhead rail was used to take coal to the eastern docks and some would end up at the western docks going by train as you know along the front.I know as a young man just out of the Army I did some kind of work connect to the overhead rail but What I can not tell you now,it might have been even before I went in the army, that was in the late 1950s.

I thought that you were the expert Richard! It was certainly used in the construction of the docks, but as to caol I'm not sure. I'll dig out some of my books and see what I can find. I daresay Paul Wells may well know.

As I said the line did run from the pit head to the docks taking coal to go overseas.
