Every 3 years they get to take money from men who work in construction.
Theirs a long line of health and safety con cards that workers have to update to keep the training industry and colleges on fat salaries.
One pen pusher will create 2 pen pushers ,,and on and on. - 17 March 2015 17:37279892That was my first reaction but if we hark back to the 90's and we had an influx of refugees claiming to have fled Kosovo employers would happily sign them up for work on building sites for £ 20 a day. No hard hats or steel toe capped boots were worn and no questions asked.
- 17 March 2015 18:07279895I would rather some training that you are kept up to date with especially when it is somewhere that has so many dangers. It is similar to first aid that is only 3 years and I have done it recently and is very different to when I done it in past.
At least you know that a person who has a certain card has had a certain level of training and it is up to date, plus some employers pay for renewal (like forklift licences). - 17 March 2015 19:21279903And most don't help you pay Darren.
If your city & gilds trained, you have dun lots of safety during training ,we now have a massif industry in health & safety, and all they think of is ways to extract money. And over load men and ,firms with bullsh...
you even need a permit to use steps on a building sites.
We have people driving machines all their life ,but every 3 or for years ,the safety zealots get you back so they can stick their hand in your pockets for some more cash.
Fuelling all this bull sh... is the tool hire companies lobbying politicians to pile on more regulations ,so they can rake it in supplying all this extra equipment.
The latest con is to have men trained in asbestos awareness ,every 12 months.
ching ching more cash.
- 17 March 2015 19:29279904Going off slightly at a tangent Regent Coaches drivers had to do a course every so often that the would have to pay for in order to show they were competent. Some had gone all their working lives without having an accident.

17 March 2015 21:05279910I would have thought that anyone who has up to date knowledge and training is likely to be more effective and safer on site than someone who did their training years ago, often with age and experience unsafe short cuts can be the norm which is how accidents happen.-----------------------------------------------------------------------

At place I worked forklift and first aid was paid for by company including refresher etc. If people did not have the training they would not know where they stood either in regards to their own safety or others around them. As if I am not trained in machinery I don't touch it, where as I have seen people who have been trained end up injuring themselves using short cuts or not being aware as so much of a habit. At end of day it is the risk to people/workers. You would be screaming if someone hurt themselves or injured someone else or others as at the end of the day. Seen people not bother with PPE and hurt themselves. Maybe a good thing the tool hire companies instruct people who do not use machinery before they use it including some indication of required PPE and safety for others too.
For awareness training, there is no need to repeat a full training course every year, however some suitable refresher should be given. This can be given as part of other health and safety updates. (HSE) - 17 March 2015 22:37279916Its no longer about safety grounded in commonsense, its about money
If you can drive a car without a refresher ,you can drive a forklift, or operate most machines you've been adequately trained to operate.

Never said retraining, refresher yes as bad habits form and should be corrected and updated practices passed on. - 18 March 2015 09:50279927How many experienced drivers know all the modern road signs?
