Counterfeit tobacco products
- 13 March 2015 18:50279764Earlier this evening Meridian ran a piece on the trade in Dover and Deal. A man in his sixties was selling 50 grams of hand rolling tobacco for £.10 in what looked like the Roman Quay.

Apparently this fake stuff can contain loads of awful things like animal droppings and the like. I've also noticed that on Facebook there are a lot of people advertising cigarettes and tobacco at knock down prices - are they these nasties too? It amazes me how they get to advertise these sales on a public website without customs getting involved - or do they.

a) I think meridian got it wrong about the tobacco, most likely it was brought in from Belgium where it costs only £5.
b) The counterfeit stuff is truly disgusting with contents like you describe but the government in their wisdom are giving the OK to plain packets which makes the counterfeiters job much simpler.
c) The ads online always cover themselves by saying that it is up to the customer to pay any import duties.
