  To add to this debate, I'm a parish councillor in Lydden and we engage a local contractor to mow our verges as necessary because if we left it to the KCC once a year schedule they would look a mess.
  
  The funds we use from our precept to finance this could be better used to improve facilities in the village, but in effect we are subsidising an inadequate service from KCC (and don't get me started on their broadband roll-out or I'll get banned!).
  
  We don't touch the weeds on the roads and footpaths, and they do look a mess.
