Marek, it is originates in "polari" the slang language used by gay men from the 20's through to the late 60's. Polari was used to hide what was being discussed at a time when homosexuality was illegal in the UK. It brings together a mixture of back slang, words used by carnival folk, seafarers etc. as well as its own inventions - it was widely publicised during the mid 60's in the Sandy and Julian sketches on the radio show Around the Horne.
A cottage was the Polari name for a gents toilet and cottaging wa the act of using it for sexual purposes.
Many Polari words have come into common parlance, such as drag, naff & mince, others such as fantabulosa and omi have disappeared.
