Louis Walsh an X factor judge has been interviewed by Police regarding an incident in a gents toilets in a nightclub in Belfast. He allegedly groped a 24 year old man.Walsh denies the allegation
This trend was set by Wilfred Bramble many years ago and then George Michael took up the pastime maybe Walsh was just doing a bit of innocent auditioning but whatever the outcome , what I really want to know is why it's referred to as ''cottaging''.. which depicts scenes of pretty little thatched houses painted white deep in the Cotswold and not the sordid smelly white tiled bogs of Belfast.

Marek, it is originates in "polari" the slang language used by gay men from the 20's through to the late 60's. Polari was used to hide what was being discussed at a time when homosexuality was illegal in the UK. It brings together a mixture of back slang, words used by carnival folk, seafarers etc. as well as its own inventions - it was widely publicised during the mid 60's in the Sandy and Julian sketches on the radio show Around the Horne.
A cottage was the Polari name for a gents toilet and cottaging wa the act of using it for sexual purposes.
Many Polari words have come into common parlance, such as drag, naff & mince, others such as fantabulosa and omi have disappeared.

Thanks very much for the explanation. It's a 'dialect' or slang language I have never come across before.
As for Julian and Sandy they got away with 'murder' in those days.

Not only Wilfred and George, but also a well known Dover DJ who now lives in sunnier climes did a similar thing in the Russell Street toilets!

there was a documentary on the slang about 20 years ago.
thinking back on "round the horne", it was well ahead of its time, would make audiences laugh today.
I have box set CDs of Round The Horne - I play them in the car to get through the misery of M25 and Dartford Tunnel stuff - they make me laugh every time! And The Navy Lark. Love 'em!

And the one that Humphrey Littleton used to chair, can't remember the name of it............makes me laugh out loud.

..and of course he had the lovely Samantha sitting on his right hand!
He once told this story about her:
"I've just received this note from Samantha to say she's been delayed meeting a gentleman beekeeper friend near Warrington. Samantha's just started keeping bees herself and has three dozen or so, and she says her friend's an expert handler. Apparently he carefully takes out her 38 bees, and soon has them flying around his head. "

As I was born in this town...
Well, I'm afraid it doesn't look as if Samantha's going to be able to make it for this half of the evening at least. I'm afraid she's had to stop off to see a grumpy, old gentleman friend in Stockport, who doesn't like spending his money. He's been phoning her constantly, angrily demanding a visit. Samantha says she doesn't really mind handling his testy calls, and she says if she butters him up properly, she can occasionally get him to splash out.
and this topical one
Incidentally, you may be interested to know that Colin's musical influences are, in fact, Middle Eastern in origin. Yes, mainly Shiite.

Round The Horne and The Navy Lark absolutely brilliant, if only comedy was as good as that now.

Yes, Marek, the old ones are the best: Q: why is English weather like the Middle East? A: because it's partly Sunni but mostly Shiite.

I thought cottaging came from the London park area toilets that resemble cottages?
