Just as people were giving up all hope owing to the cost of living, they realised that they couldn't afford to die either.

I recommend saving up now for the aforementioned £7000, not hanging around too long and dying at the proper time, otherwise you will end up terribly ancient probably getting beaten up and forced to wear nappies in an old folks home somewhere. Not an endearing prospect.
