My parents and older brother lived in Malta for eight years and the first thing I noticed was the absence of birdsong, which came apparent when I visited the 'Silent City'. I spotted some Maltese guys with enormous nets attached to eighteen foot poles which they swung up to catch flocks of birds as they flew overhead.
