There are a couple of injured coots dragging around Kearsney Abbey at the moment.
The poor creatures each have a broken leg and are obviously in great distress. They are semi-mobile still but I don't give them long IF they are not caught and treated.
I've informed the RSPCA but in the meantime please spread the word to keep dogs away from them. Anyone with a net AND time on their hands meanwhile would have a good chance of catching them and handing them in to the vet.
They were lumbering around the area near the bridge over the lake earlier before making it into the water but they cannot even swim properly.

last time i was up there a swan appeared to be in distress, i could not get near.
i was looking for a notice giving a telephone number to ring in such an emergency, could not find one.
a year or two i was in pencester gardens when i spotted a duck trapped inside what looked like an elastic band, he/she would not let me near to free it.
got the RSPCA down they sorted it in no time.
hope the coots survive.
Some vets will respond, but I do not know which local ones will do that.

I rang the vets in Castle Street and they said they would treat them if they were brought in - not easy though.
I hope the RSPCA can get there as they are quite treatable.
Are there any RSPB offices locally?

When the animals have died after their agonising slow deaths?
I understand in Italy is is common to take potshots at wild birds as they migrate. Ripping off the wing of a bird so its flock is attracted by its screams - so they can kill more - is common practice.
Bon appetit.

very few birds ever migrate over rome en route to africa, they know how they will end up.
the same applies in malta, i believe they are trying to stop it.

My parents and older brother lived in Malta for eight years and the first thing I noticed was the absence of birdsong, which came apparent when I visited the 'Silent City'. I spotted some Maltese guys with enormous nets attached to eighteen foot poles which they swung up to catch flocks of birds as they flew overhead.
Coot anyone?, I must admit that I will try anything once, squirrel's not bad, as they say in the southern states of America ' There aint nuthin better, than a corn bred critter' , so squirrel is fair game, I have some interesting recipes by Nell Heaton including Swan

Just surfing the recent topic`s, and I remembered reading this one. I placed a picture of an injured coot the other day on here out Kearsney Abbey. Seem`s it`s still hobbling about. Here it is again from early in the week.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
