seeing that the uk hasnt signed up on that agreement so that makes the uk a non team player.untill the uk and the other country/s sign up to it,this makes it a non starter for 10.

According to the article, crime and illegal immigration are disturbing the 25 countries signed up to the Schengen agreement.
As I see it, all these countries should enforce tight border security, and Britain should do the same.
The price to be paid for not stopping crime and illegal immigration is very high, so border security must have a high priority.

The opposite view is that it allows law abiding citizens to freely go about their business without being stopped by border agents etc.
Frankly the claim regarding "crime" is a spurious and deceitful way of saying "we dont want you non EU types here"

I am not sure what the figures are today but when I was a serving officer (1970's -90's) 99.7% of all passengers posed no problem whatsoever and were allowed to proceed without let or hinderance.
I regret immigration bashing is blamed for all our ills from crime to unemployment from housing to health. A great whipping post for most badly informed right wingers.

i totaly agree with ross on this one.
the only border crontrolls we need is where the illeages come from,ie.along the medeteraian coast, and the turkish border.

MAREK/ROSS
That is the problem by the looks of this thread.
although border controls appeared to work in the UK when they were in place, the thread indicates all our woes are because of the immigration issue, but lets not hide from the issue we have here of our lawless society, and society in general
that needs a good shake uo

the evidence is pretty clear that lack of border controls assists movement of criminals, we read of cases every day where people with previous convictions in their own countries face our courts.
many of our own move to france, belgium and holland when they know that their collar is about to be felt.
police forces share information but many have enough to do dealing with their own.

At the bottom of this is the economic situation that so many EU nations are facing. The governments need to get a grip and take a broader, and longer term, view rather than posturing and trying to demonstrate how 'potent' each is. Isolationism doesn't work as attractive as it might seem and, as far as the EU is concerned, we really are 'all in this together'. Fragmentation will have severe adverse effects for us all.
