Sometimes disturbing notions are expressed implying that unemployed British people in reality don't want to work. I personally believe that many are on the receiving end of a very one way system that privileges the wealthy and those on their way to making wealth, and doesn't leave much chance for others who are left without much - or any - practicle experience. Furthermore, minimum wages can be so ridiculously low when one has to pay the rent, not to mention a mortgage, and travel expenses, that some may even ask themselves why bother. Would it not be better to introduce conscription, for men and women who want to work, but cannot manage to get in the employment system, obviously a voluntary conscription, but which obliges the participants to take part in various kinds of work, in groups, with the constant aid of the experienced serge and of corporal, with sergent-major keeping an overall eye on things?
Practically, a company of a hundred are housed in the barracks for one month, with leave at the weekend. Up at seven, a shower, cup of coffee, and cross-country running for half an hour; another quick shower, breakfast, a lecture from the officer, a hymn to Britannia and Jesus Christ; then marching and singing in military order and uniform to the local factory. Four hours work, with all given explanations and training; then back to baracks. Dinner at two; a march around the parade ground, a quick shower, and then to the local farms. in groups of ten, to carry out work following indications from the commanders.
Once a week land-scape cleaning, and once a week office and computer training.
All participants receive one thousand five-hundred pounds a month, plus some soldiers priviledges, such as free access to the arena, an allowance of five pounds a day to cover coffee-shop expenses, free access to Aristotle's academy.
After a month, anyone can sign on again for another course, or, if sufficiently trained and confident, can apply for a job, obviously with the reccomandations of serge, with the right to choose part time or full time. All privileges would remain ... in return for the obligation to present once a week for half a day of physical training and discipline!
