A short commemoration was held on the seafront this morning to mark 15 years since 58 Chinese people were found dead in the back of a container at the port, and to remember them, their families and all who were involved in the discovery, and in many cases are still affected by the event. The commemoration was lead by the Chaplain of the Port of Dover, and Mayor Chris Precious represented the town and said some appropriate words.
In accordance with Chinese tradition, the names of all who died were read out by a Chinese national, and a note of Chinese currency was burned for each individual.
Whatever your views on the political problems of immigrants and asylum seekers faced all over the world today, the last sentence on the memorial says it all.
