i can only think of peter kay as a top stand up comedian - all my other favourites are dead.
the likes of tommy cooper, les dawson, sir bernard manning etc have not really been replaced.

A style of comedy that I don't really understand - it must just be my age.
That being said I think Frankie Howerd was quite a character. His carryings-on would still have people in floods...of tears even today.

Tommy Cooper was the no/1 in my books just to look at him had me rolling over,but in real life he was in great pain with his back.

i remember frankie having a renaissance after years in the wilderness with students deciding he was for them.
in his typical self effacing witty style he said to his agent that he expected to go down well at cambridge, the agent replied "not really they're expecting ben elton".

Also a great ones was T/Handcock, and S/ James ,THere are none about now like there was on the TV they all had good shows.

i think kb was referring to stand up comedians rather than comic actors when he started this thread.
