    I agree with Jan - however, as Howard indicates, there are many elders without the means to keep warm and fed and without the circles of support that will keep them on the radar. Many - more than we might think - do not claim the benefits to which they are entitled because (de facto) they are too vulnerable to understand how vulnerable they are and they have slipped through the nets. Or they do not believe they are "entitled". That latter feeling is not helped by constant tabloid stoking of the benefits insults - fine if people are genuine spongers, but the message is loud and clear from the red tops: claim and you are scum. Not a good message for elders with pride and independence at their core.
