The Coastguard service is passing through turbulent times. There have been plans to "modernise" it by closing down numerous stations all around the coast resulting in the loss of all local knowledge. After protests from all quarters, there has been a partial U-turn and so far some stations have been reprieved. The amount of money to be saved is very small, particularly when weighed against the potential loss of life amongst the millions using our coasts. The proposals do not affect commercial shipping in any way as ships have comprehensive radio installations. Nor do they affect Dover Coastguard.

Other potentially very serious cuts are the elimination of the four Emergency Towing Vessels stationed around our coasts as an insurance policy against ships being disabled and grounding, with the potential for major oil pollution amongst other things, and the disbandment of the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) supplying trained firefighter teams to assist ships on fire.
