  Here's a compromise. We go forward half an hour and Europe goes back half an hour. Then we are all on the same time and the arguments for and against are all less valid.
  
  Not a particularly original idea; India and Pakistan have time zones which differ from their neighbours by half an hour. On the other hand, China has just one time zone. This leads to the ridiculous situation where at one border post you have to alter your watch by three and a half hours.
