The inmates have to go somewhere and my understanding is that other centres are overbooked. As for the staff the nearest prison is on the Isle of Sheppey so relocation seems out of the question.
A Home Office spokesman said: "Detaining and removing people with no right to be in the UK, with dignity and respect, is an essential part of maintaining effective immigration controls.
"That work requires an estate of modern, secure centres located with easy access to the airports from which removals take place.
"We keep our detention estate under constant review and have decided the site at Dover should no longer be used as an immigration removal centre.
"All detainees will be transferred to other immigration removal centres."
I've arranged an event this Wednesday for people working at DIRC who have been told they are losing their jobs. It's specifically to help members of staff who won't be able to find another job in the prison service.
Local employment agency New Appointments Group will be at the town council office in Biggin St from 9am-1pm on Wednesday 21st Oct to help DIRC staff find work.
The Town Clerk has made the large meeting room free for the day and also contacted Jobcentre Plus to bring their advisors along.
Its an old inefficient building, a removal centre should be a quick in and out places comprising of social services the law court and a runway . maybe charley boy should make a comment.
